There are so many reasons that The Guardian declared Bánh Mì the world’s best street food. Vietnamese are very creative when it comes to food. People created many versions of the Bánh Mì, making it hard to identify all the different varieties. If you’re a true lover of Bánh Mì, and you live in Danang or about to visit Danang, you can grab yourself the cheapest, most mouth watering and most creative versions of Bánh Mì in the world.
- Bánh Mì thịt chả (normal Bánh Mì with pork and “cha”)
The very basic Bánh Mì is normally filled with pork or char siu, chả, pâté, spring onion, cucumber, cilantro, chilli, Vietnamese mint and possibly some other herbs. This can be found anywhere in Danang.
- Bánh Mì thịt nguội (Bánh Mì with jambon)
Another typical type of Bánh Mì with main ingredients are jambon, cha and pate. It doesn’t include any other herbs but long strips of chilli, cucumber and spring onion.
- Bánh Mì thịt nướng (Bánh Mì with grilled pork)
The next one is Bánh Mì thịt nướng. Fillings generally include grilled pork, Vietnamese mint, papaya pickle, a bit of butter, pate and chilli sauce.
- Bánh Mì gà (Bánh Mì with cotton meat)
Because of its unique, simplicity, cheap, tasty, you cannot found anywhere else in Vietnam. Unlike others, Bánh Mì gà (literally “chicken bread”) is round in shape and filled with “cotton meat” originally made from chicken (hence the name), mayonnaise, carrot and green papaya pickle. It’s cheap (about 8000 VND) and simple, yet super tasty — you’ll be addicted in no time. No one can resist the sweet and salty taste of cotton meat, sourness of carrot and papaya pickle, spiciness of chilli sauce (if you want), and fatiness of mayonnaise… all combined in a crispy, hot bread roll.
- Bánh Mì que (Bánh Mì with pate)
The cheapest type of Bánh Mì (6000VND), Bánh Mì que (literally Bánh Mì stick) looks like, well, a stick. It’s filled with only pate, mayonnaise, fried shallots and chilli sauce. You cannot ask for more with that price but trust us, you won’t regret when taste it. You can easily find this one selling alongside with Bánh Mì Ga
- Bánh Mì heo quay (Bánh Mì with roasted pork)
You haven’t visit Danang if you haven’t taste this type of Bánh Mì. Roasted pork has very different texture and taste with normal pork. It was mixed it with some Vietnamese coriander and pepper salt, and ultimately finish assembling with a special sauce made from roasted pork. Today, it is not easy to find a correct Bánh Mì heo quay, almost impossible to find one with the perfect topping sauce. But if you happen to see one, please put a comment below.
- Bánh Mì ông Tý
This Bánh Mì is quite special as it has dried chili flakes, a bit of sauce and special home-made Chả. A surprise is Mr Ty has operated this business for nearly 40 years, and now has two shops in Danang. The shop may look a bit rundown and disappointing at first glance, but the taste is amazing and you will want to come back for another.
- Bánh Mì bột lọc (Bánh Mì with tapioca dumplings)
You may already know that bột lọc is normally made in the following two ways: wrapped up in banana leaves and steamed (bột lọc lá chuối), and directly boiled in water (bột lọc trần). The latter is used as filling along with some herbs and light sweet fish sauce. It may a bit chewy the first time you taste it, but I’m sure you will fall in love with it just as we have.
